From Councilmember Tim McOsker
I am excited to announce that this past Thursday, the City of Los Angeles acquired the historic Watts Train Station. This iconic landmark holds deep significance in Watts, a neighborhood rich in history, culture, and resilience. The Watts Station, once a vital stop along the Pacific Electric “Red Car” line connecting Los Angeles to San Pedro through Watts, stands as a rare survivor of the 1965 Watts Rebellion and a witness to over a century of transformation in South Los Angeles.
While there is more information to come regarding its future, I am committed to ensuring that any vision for the station is rooted in community input and truly community driven. We will also continue to partner with the local organizations who have long cared for this space, who have preserved its legacy, and who provide meaningful services to Watts. Together, we now have the opportunity to connect this space to the Cultural Crescent for the benefit of generations to come.
Construction on the Slater Avenue Railroad Safety Improvement Project, located between East 110th and East 111th St. in Watts, is set to begin following a Notice to Proceed. The project aims to enhance safety by installing active railroad warning devices, new fencing, and ADA-compliant curb ramps. Additional improvements include sidewalk, curb, and gutter replacement, as well as updated signage and striping. Outreach efforts are ongoing, and residents in the area will be notified of the tentative start date.
